This massive expanse of concrete is truly awe-inspiring. Built in the 1950's, this square has been the sight of many historic events in modern China. In the 1960's it was the sight of huge student rallies during the Cultural Revolution. It was the site of many Chinese citizens to mourn the loss of Premier Zhou Enlai in 1976 and in 1989 it was the sight of the controversial student uprising that has had a lasting effect on China's move towards modernization.
