1. This was taken on a street near my university. One day this street was lined with shops, the next everything was demolished. No city council hearings, no protests, no court injunctions. When someone wants to build something, they build it. In this case, they want to widen the road. The legitimate businesses on this street were most likely given compensation by the government, but the illegal business were probably just shut down. When I say an illegal business I mean a shop or store that is operating without a valid license. There are plenty of these kinds of businesses operating all over China.

So here are a bunch of workers taking a break while one of their buddies taks a whack at a building.
