This Tibetan inspired temple was built in 1767 and occupies 22,000 square meters. It's design was based on the Potala Palace in Tibet and so it is also known as the Lesser Potala Palace.

The temple was built for several reasons: to commemorate the 60th birthday of the Emperor Qianlong and the 80th birthday of his mother, to show respect to the religious beliefs of the Mongols and Tibetans, and as a show of national strength.

It is the largest temple of the 8 Outer Temples of Chengde. It's undergoing some renovation, so in the future it should be more impressive to see.
