Yong He Gong is a Tibetan Yellow Sect Lamaist temple (The Dalai Lama is from this sect). It was built in 1694 during the Qing Dynasty originally as the residence of Prince Yong. After Yong became Emperor Yongzheng, half of the residence was converted into a lama temple. The temple is still in operation and thus photos are prohibited in most of the halls. Of course that's where the coolest stuff is. Statues of Tibetan Buddhist gods, hand written religious texts, the works. The highlight of the temple is the 26 meter-high gold-leafed, Maitreya Buddha carved from a single piece of sandalwood. It's in the Guiness Book. It really impressive - too bad I couldn't take a picture of it.
