The Chongqing People's Great Hall was built in 1953, and Deng Xiaoping was one member of a small team that oversaw the design and construction. The design mimics Qing and Ming Dynasty architectural styles. The central tower was designed to mimic the Temple of Heaven in Beijing and the structure just below that and above the entry was designed to resemble Tiananmen Gate (that's where Mao's picture hangs in Beijing).

Seems kind of counter-revolutionary to emulate imperialist architecture, doesn't it. Oh well.
