The Beijing Botanical Garden is just East of Fragrant Hills. The gardens are so-so, although there are some interesting trails to walk along. The two big features of the park are the giant botanical greenhouse (which I didn't feel like paying to visit) and Wofusi, a Buddhist temple originally built during the Tang Dynasty. Wofusi's exterior is unimpressive so I didn't take any pictures. In the main temple shrine there is a reclining statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. It is said the image is supposed to be of Sakyamuni teaching his last lesson before leaving the mortal world. The statue's feet are bare, so over time, emperors made offerings of large pairs of slippers to the statue and are on display. Of course photos were prohibited, so you must use your imagination. |
